A “will you marry me” proposal in a hot air balloon high above the Swiss Alps. It was all Greg’s idea!
The balloon was appearing in the 40th Parmigiani Festival International de Balloons in Châteaux-d’Oeux, Switzerland. It is possible to take a hot air balloon ride in the afternoon. Greg had booked a balloon just for us over the Internet from his home in Florida.
However, things didn’t turn out as planned. We thought the weather was okay but we overheard someone say that it was “too windy”. This made it difficult for the balloons with the larger baskets to fly safely. After an hour of waiting, we thought it was not going to happen. The organizer was informing the people around us that there would be no flights today. Suddenly I heard Greg’s saying that we had a flight!
We were led to the balloon which with a basket that was smaller than expected. There was just enough room for Greg, Emily, myself and the pilot. This was going to be difficult taking pictures! In fact it went well using my 14-24 lens and leaning out of the basket with the camera above my head.
We looked back down to the festival location and saw the other balloons being packed away. We was the only one flying. It was an amazing feeling.
Landing seemed a problem. Our experienced pilot had to find somewhere without any power cables. It was difficult. We flew on towards Gstaad. By the airport in Saanen, our pilot spotted a snow covered field by a farm. Perfect. We braced and landed without the basket tipping over when it it the ground. The farmer’s small children came running out of the farmhouse very excited.
The support crew had been tracking us from the road. Emily and Greg posed for more pictures whilst the balloon was packed on to the trailer. It was dark as we made our way back to the festival location. Awesome!
I took too many pictures! I split the files into batches and uploaded each batch when it was finished. Greg and Emily were able to publish pictures on the Internet quickly and inform their family and friends of their engagement to be married.
“Thank you John. We loved looking through the final set of pictures. You did an amazing job and we couldn’t be happier.” – Emily and Greg
