Oeschinensee Lake, Kandersteg
I went for a hike to Oeschinensee Lake on the July 22nd, 2022. It’s a lake situated in the mountains above Kandersteg, Switzerland.
I have seen some nice pictures from the area. I wondered if it is suitable for a photo shoot. A surprise engagement.
This area is a big tourist attraction. The day I visited was hot, very hot. Many of the visitors headed for the lake. There were many visitors. That’s important to know if you want privacy during your wedding proposal or renewal of vows.
The gondola cable car from Kandersteg does not go anywhere near the lake. It’s still a 30 minute walk to the lake from the cable car (Google Maps: 24 minutes – 1.6 km.) – downhill. Therefore it is a 30 minute uphill walk back to the cable car station. Or longer depending on your fitness! There is an electric bus service operating between the lake and the cable car service.
Check the road down to Kandersteg from the lake. It’s all downhill. It might be easier for you.
The pictures on the official website look beautiful. I wondered when and where the pictures were taken. The sun is at different heights at different times of the year. For example it is lower during the winter. There are some pictures that are from a drone. Others from a trail that isn’t easy to walk and you have to be fit and wearing the correct clothing etc.
I did find one spot that is about 30 minutes from the cable car. See the picture of me looking out at the lake. Behind me is a restaurant. People were looking at me from the sun balcony.
I did use the whole day walking up and down trails looking for locations. There were trees everywhere that are surely blocking some nice views of the lake and mountains. There were some nice spots by the lake but these were occupied by families and people swimming in the lake.
It’s a nice place to visit. But please remember its a long walk to the lake from the cable car. It’s also a long, uphill walk back from the lake.
Google Maps. I could not find the cable car station on Google Maps until I had zoomed in on “Rodelbahn Oeschinsensee”. Then you see the icon for the cable car. Google Maps does show “Skilift Bire” which is not near the cable car station.
People have asked for a lake location with mountains and Oeschinensee Lake is perfect. Bachalpsee Lake is also perfect. Read my report here.
I recorded my route from Läger back to the cable car station using the Komoot App. You can read the full report with maps and pictures here.
